I have just returned today from a really interesting Jersey Compliance Officer Association presentation (12 may 2015) that had Rear Admiral Chris Parry CBE speaking on global risks.

More specifically, his talk provided a quick (1 hour) run through his work on forecasting of future geopolitical developments, emerging trends and the associated business risks and investment opportunities.

What made me chuckle at the end of the presentation and on the way out of the venue, was an attendee (a compliance officer I guess) saying …

• What has any of that got to do with Compliance…..

I wanted to shout…EVERYTHING, but restrained myself!!!

From a personal perspective I am sometimes taken aback how little Directors (Governance), Risk Officers and Compliance Officers know what is happening in the world and what is (or may be ) coming up….surely without this perspective and context risk cannot be truly managed.

Good GRC is about not just about checking the past, it is certainly not just about auditing what is in front of you (tickling boxes), it is however definitely about forecasting the possibilities for the future (AKA – RISK Assessment, identification and management)….

So from my perspective Im more informed and prepared than I was when I feel out of my bed this morning….
