Treasurer jailed for stealing £250,000 from war veterans charities

A MAN who defrauded two organisations for Armed Forces veterans out of more than £250,000 has been jailed for four and a half years by the Jersey Royal Court.

Kevin Nicholls (58) was the treasurer for the Jersey United Services Club and the Royal British Legion bar.

Over a period of four years he transferred £166,770.42 from the JUSC accounts to his own personal bank accounts.

Nicholls, who has only two previous convictions for minor motoring offences, then stole almost £90,000 from the Royal British Legion bar over a two-year period.

He told a member of the JUSC that the club was struggling financially and scammed him out of £5,000 that had been intended as a loan to the club.

Nicholls pleaded guilty to one count of fraud, one count of fraudulent conversion and one count of larceny.

Advocate Jane Grace, defending, said that Nicholls’ offending had got out of hand and it was clear that he was a ‘dedicated family man, a supportive husband and a loving father’.

He was jailed by the Superior Number, which convenes for the most serious offences.
