The 7th edition of the Basel AML Index was released today by the Basel Institute on Governance through the International Centre for Asset Recovery.

The Basel AML Index is a composite index covering 129 countries and assigns each country a score on a scale from 0 (low risk) to 10 (high risk). The overall risk score is a weighted average of 14 indicators comprising the AML/CTF regulations, corruption, financial standards, political disclosure and the rule of law.

Mauritius has secured the 85th position in the list of 129 countries, up from its previous spot of 78, with a score of 4.94.

The key findings are as follows:

1) The countries with the highest AML risk are Tajikistan, Mozambique, Afghanistan and Laos;

2) The three lowest risk countries are the same as last year: Finland followed by Estonia and Lithuania;

3) The greatest improvements since 2017 have been made by Trinidad and Tobago, Tanzania, Bolivia and Ghana; and

4) The countries that deteriorated most severely in their scores in 2018 are Denmark, Iceland, Slovenia and Taiwan (China).
