Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have been found innocent of tax evasion in a ruling by Italy’s supreme court. The five-judge panel overturned two previous court rulings that found the designers guilty, sentencing them to 20 months jail time each in April of this year.
The investigation stemmed from the sale of the company’s main brands to a Luxenbourg-based holding company in 2004 and alleged tax evasions to the tune of €40 million.
The design duo were charged in 2013 and again in April this year, but the designers have denied the charges throughout, previously stating they were “speechless and astounded” of the rulings, which they called “inexplicable”.
Shortly after the ruling was announced, Gabbana tweeted; “”We were certain! We are honest people!”
The designers then released a statement, saying; “We have always been honest and we are extremely proud of this recognition by the Italian Court of Justice.”
The company’s general director, Cristiana Ruella finance director, Giuseppe Minoni and accountant Luciano Patelli were all cleared of the charges.
