It seems that rarely does a day goes by without a cyber-attack on a major company making the headlines and now we have the high-profile cyber-attacks of Friday 12th May. This news must now put us on alert as to the dangers of inadequate IT security.
This latest NHS breach highlights the vulnerability of businesses to cyber security breaches and the potential consequences that can follow. Moreover, while some organisations are aware of cyber security, they do not embrace the reality of risk management of information security risks. Many businesses are focussed on the wrong areas and are ignoring the diverse nature of the risks faced by legacy systems, human factors and poor understanding of the implications of an attack
Also, this latest incident is a good example of how bad news can be the catalyst for change, and with the looming shadow of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the requirements to be compliant from 25th, May 2018 must now be a call to action. All enterprises (including charities, clubs and associations) should be considering preparing now – you cannot delay this any further. The fact is we have had two years to prepare!
ALSO, while it is clear that the GDPR will have a significant impact on all businesses, those who are seriously taking their current legal obligations will have a distinct advantage.
