Comsure workshop on threats from organised crime

The threat to Jersey’s finance industry from organised criminal enterprises will be discussed in a unique business workshop on 20th June.

Former Director General of SOCA (Britain’s Serious Organised Crime Agency) and the National Crime Squad, William (‘Bill’) Hughes CBE, QPM (pictured), will be hosted in Jersey by Comsure to share his knowledge on combatting money laundering and financing of terrorism.

Bill intends to bring awareness to the forefront through a frank and candid workshop that uses real life case studies. He will be discussing serious organised crime as a transnational, global phenomenon and law enforcements role in preventing and detecting it. He will conclude with how Jersey’s financial services industry can play a role in preventing and detecting this type of criminal activity.

The Comsure workshop, which will take place at The Grand Hotel, is aimed at Directors, MLCOs, MLROs, lawyers, law enforcement, and financial services regulators. All delegates will be invited to a drinks reception following the workshop to meet Bill Hughes and be introduced to iTrack – the new risk assessment tool developed in Jersey for all AML supervised firms.

Bill will also be guest speaker at the ICSA annual dinner on the 21st June.

Bill Hughes CBE, QPM, says:

‘The focus of the Comsure workshop is upon the activities of SOCA and the National Crime Squad between 2001 and 2010, when I was the Director General of those organisations. It will deal with serious organised crime as a transnational, global phenomenon, outlining the ways that criminal enterprises have conducted their businesses, and the international approaches that have been used to deal with them to date. The use of SAR’s and general AML information and the subsequent intelligence products derived from this information to instigate and support investigations will be explored.’

Mathew Beale, Managing Director, Comsure, says:

‘It’s a case of prevention is better than cure and Jersey has to be careful that it doesn’t just view itself in isolation. Money laundering and financing of terrorism methods are constantly changing and therefore the all Jersey firms should understand the emerging threats and vulnerabilities through examination of typologies and case studies. Comsure are proud to be offering such a unique workshop to the business community and be able to welcome Bill on his first visit to Jersey.’
