The Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman (CIFO) has issued Q3 complaints numbers

Complaint numbers for July – September 2017 have been published on CIFO’s website. Brief headlines are given here, for further information, please see the report.

In this third quarter of 2017, 119 complaints were received and 29 new case files were opened – these are complaints that are within CIFO’s mandate as set by law.

Most relate to

  • the banking sector, followed by
  • insurance and then
  • investments/funds.

During July – September, 90 complaints were closed. Of these:

  • 51% (46) could not be dealt with as they were outside the scope of CIFO’s mandate as set by law;
  • 12% (11) were determined by the Ombudsman;
  • 23% (21) were successfully mediated by case handlers;
  • 13% (12) were withdrawn by the complainant after coming to CIFO.

Principal Ombudsman Douglas Melville said:

“Banking has continued as the predominant sector giving rise to complaints for a second consecutive quarter. We also note that the proportion of complaints rejected as outside CIFO’s remit has remained lower this quarter than was the experience in 2016 as a whole.”
