LOVE OF RUGBY SNARED DRUGS BARON

A notorious drug trafficker, Kevin Hanley, who used the cover of a fruit and veg business and lorry delivery firm to smuggle millions of pounds worth of drugs has been jailed for more than 17 years. £2 million in cash stuffed in suitcases, and drugs worth almost £3 million were recovered.

Hanley had been on the run for eight months before being tracked down to an Irish bar in a suburb of Athens which was showing the rugby game between the Lions and Australia. Investigators guessed that the rugby loving smuggler wouldn’t be able to resist watching the game. Sure enough he showed up at the Irish bar to watch the game and the investigators, one of which sat with him watching the game, moved in to make the arrest. It is not clear whether they waited until the end of the game.

The NCA regional head of investigations is quoted as saying “it was good old fashioned policing that led investigators to a bar in Greece, after they correctly predicted that a love of rugby made him vulnerable and he would not be able to resist coming out of hiding to watch a crucial Lions match.”

The morale…don’t watch rugby in an Irish Bar.
